The holy grail of the automotive world is a car that is cheap, fast, and reliable. It is also the adage of many who use it as the true error in most people’s mindset as they approach exotic cars. Unfortunately, there are no vehicles which satisfy all three of those characteristics. The most one can hope for are two out of three.
Here are some examples:
- A Honda Accord is cheap and reliable but it certainly is not fast by any standard
- A Bugatti Veyron is fast and reliable but at $1,500,000 is the furthest from cheap that you can get
- You can buy a 15 year old Toyota Supra for less than $10,000 and with another $10,000 or so you can have over 600 horsepower or more. It is cheap and fast but will never be reliable.
What we have to do as we search for cars is to try to find the right balance. You will be making sacrifices in some areas and gaining in others. You may give up some speed for reliability or pay a little extra for some peace of mind.
Of course, when renting you get the speed and a fair price and no concerns about reliability. Is that the answer to the age old conundrum? We like to think so.
Drive smart!
